Wash Don't Run

I was in Reston, Virginia from the 2nd until the 6th attending a programming conference. I spent Monday exploring Washington D.C.

Fall colours hung and fell from the trees. I'll post some pictures soon.

Travelling alone gave me time to read, ponder.

Here's a poem I wrote one night, drawing from the 2004-2005 memory banks. (Mmmmmm, ambiguous.)

I caught, one morning, a glimpse

 of an ought-to-be

  hanging from your lips

I fought, one morning, an ellipse

of what I ought to see

  shadowed by your hips

I thought, one morning, we'd come to grips

with that we sought to flee:

the true purpose of these trips

And now for something completely different:

People Before Profit

Don't be fooled by pop-culture, there's more to HipHop than bling and scantily-clad ladies.

Here's 'peg-city rapper John Smith with his track Kinship of the Down and Out, from the album Pinky's Laundromat.

(Sam, your street gets a shout-out.)

Shaddai

Mezuzah

I noticed this object nailed inside our front doorway when we first moved in. I soon forgot it as we don't often use that door. It caught my eye again this past weekend, so I decided to query the collective conciousness.

Eight minutes later I had my answer:

It's a Mezuzah, a Jewish house blessing and sign of devotion to God. Mezuzot contain small parchments inscribed with two sections from the Torah's Book of Deuteronomy (6:4-9 and 11:13-21).

The symbol at the top of the object is the letter Shin, which stands for "Shaddai," one of the Hebrew names of God. The letter Shin was also the inspiration for Spock's Vulcan salute on the original Star Trek.

Thanks again AskMeFi.

Live long and prosper. ;)

An interesting aside:

This picture is now my most viewed image on Flickr with over 1600 views.

Urban Forest Explored

Urban Forest

Over the weekend we explored the urban forest South-West of our home. On Saturday morning I brought Soda there for some off-leash fun, and we returned with Shan on Sunday.

The forest is triangle shaped, with an estimated area of over 100,000 meters squared (or .1km2), and is composed of tall prairie grasses, dense forest (mainly Trembling Aspen with some Bur Oak), and (presently dry) wetland. It sits on what I believe to be CN land, south of Taylor Ave.

I discovered this forest during a Glutton University field trip in 2003. It remains my favourite secret forest in Winnipeg. It appears that I'm not alone; after following some human tracks we spied a campground, their tent fire red, camouflaged by the afternoon sunlight.

Hopefully this land is never sold for development.

"Might is Right" Gone Pear Shaped

Woof

Three years after George W. Bush denounced torture as "an affront to human dignity," the US Congress has paved the way for the legality of certain abusive interrogation methods, and have effectively killed Habeas Corpus.

The US president now has tyrannical control over (the broadly defined) "illegal enemy combatants."

"[The bill passed today in Congress] could subject legal residents of the United States, as well as foreign citizens living in their own countries, to summary arrest and indefinite detention with no hope of appeal. The president could give the power to apply this label to anyone he wanted."

[New York Times]

What's more...

"Burried deep within this legislation is a provision that will pardon President Bush, and all the members of his administration, of any possible crimes connected to the torture and mistreatment of detainees dated all the way back to September 11th, 2001."

[CNN Video]

A number of CIA, military, and FBI professionals spoke out against the bill to no avail.

On a lighter note, the US Senate wins fight to lower allowable amperage levels on detainees' testicles.

Side note: These events triggered the 60th email to Prime Minister Steve.
