Turtle Shells [Music]

I crafted a Welcome Home (from European adventures) mix for my folks. Mom isn’t home yet, but I was hanging out with Dad yesterday. I’d like to share the mix with you too. :)

Other than the Sufjan Stevens tracks, this is music I discovered in 2006 which didn’t fit on my Look up! Get Down! mix, slower tempos, more guitar and vocal oriented, less electronics.

Favourite Dance-tas-tic Tunes of 2006

Look Up! Get Down! (mp3 mix)

This is part one of three best-of-2006 mixes; an homage to sweaty parties, energizing beats, and the tangled interaction of musician and dancer. Arms flail. Feet shuffle. We resonate.

I’ve been working on a year-end mix cd. It was a good year in music.

Chills Bells [Music]

Tomorrow is our winter Solstice (Northern Hemisphere).

Our tribal ancestors feasted on this shortest of days. They gave Thanks before the coming of the famine months.

Another cycle of the Wheel of the Year. You exist. Peace be the journey.

People Before Profit [Music]

Don’t be fooled by pop-culture, there’s more to HipHop than bling and scantily-clad ladies.

Here’s ‘peg-city rapper John Smith with his track Kinship of the Down and Out, from the album Pinky’s Laundromat.

I forgot to mention that the Nerdcore Hip-Hop Compilation was released earlier this month. My track, In a Way, can be found on Volume 3, Rare and Classic Tracks (quick bittorrent link).

The quality of tracks on these discs is varied, and you have to be fairly geeky to understand the inside-jokes that most of the tracks are built around. I guess that was the point: *nerd*core.

The net is awash in Scientology debate:

A quick run-down of Scientology doctrine from Wikipedia:

75 million years ago, [an alien ruler of the “Galactic Confederacy” named Xenu], brought billions of people to Earth in DC-8-like spacecraft, stacked them around volcanoes and blew them up with hydrogen bombs. Their souls then clustered together and stuck to the bodies of the living, and continue to wreak chaos and havoc today.

These evil alien souls can be removed from us if we pay to be audited. Auditing can also free us of Engrams, painful memories which are the single source of all human illness.

Eventually, if we pay enough, we get super-powers.

L. Ron Hubbard, wrote Sci-Fi pulp-fiction before he founded Scientology. ;)

In a Way (a track I put together at Glutton University) will be featured on the upcoming Nerdcore compilation CD.

A Rebel Yell [Music]

The Kamkars from the album Chant of Drums

From allmusic.com:

The Kamkars […] fuse elements from their Kurdish folk music heritage with conventions from Persian classical music, using instruments from both. [They are a] family ensemble, consisting of seven brothers, one sister, and her son from Samandaj, in northwest Iran.

How To Tell If Your Friend Is A Robot

Left behind [Music]

In early 2003 I mined my record collection for samples to create the following musical-collage:

Wally Glutton - Things to come

I later made some changes to this track to produce:

Wally Glutton - Incremental Changes - Etc Mix

I’m not sure the changes improved the track. Actually, many of the voice samples are less intelligible on the this version.

The second version highlights the music of fellow Winnipegger Equanim. His album Instrumental Language is available online care of Balanced Records.

Last Friday I sent the following via email to some friends, as well as to ask.metafilter:

According to Leibniz, a theory must be simpler than the data it explains. In other words (for the nerds amongst us), understanding equals compression.

I challenge you to help me understand this via a thought-experiment:

Let’s take two experiences we are all familiar with: Pleasure and Pain.

Explain the difference between these two experiences.

There is (of course) no “correct” answer; however, I ask that you attempt to use as few words as possible to explain your answer.

If you’d like to add to the debate, hit me up with a comment. I’ll be compiling the responses this weekend.

It’s interesting to note that the question was removed from ask.metafilter for being too meta.

  • Motorist throws food out of window.
  • Courier, disliking littering, picks up food and throws food back in car.
  • Motorist dumps coffee on courier.
  • Courier scratches car with key.
  • Road rage ensues.

And finally, from the stungeye archives: My Winnipeg, Against the Reality.

Twinkle [Music]

Stars kicked off their latest North American tour last night, here in Winnipeg.

They performed to a sold out crowd at the newly renovated Ramada conference centre. Their set heavily favoured their latest album, and was well received by the all ages crowd.

Some adjectives for description: honest, theatrical, emotional, humorous, raw, rock’n.

Stars are from Montreal. Their music is unapologetically poppy, and proves that pop isn’t always a synonym for crap.

Related: At least today’s pop music is an easy target for satire.

Last Saturday we went to an Electro party at the 301 Overtoom squat (or ex-squat?).

"Squatting is the act of occupying an abandoned or unoccupied space or building that the squatter does not own, rent, or otherwise have permission to use. Squatters often claim rights over the spaces they have squatted by virtue of occupation, rather than ownership; in this sense, squatting is similar to (and potentially a necessary condition of) adverse possession, by which a possessor of real property without title may eventually gain legal title to the real property. [...]

Besides places to live squats are often socially interesting places, hosting give-away shops, pirate radio stations, (often vegetarian or vegan) restaurants."

Squatting @ Wikipedia

There is a long history of squatting in The Netherlands, and throughout the rest of Europe. In Amsterdam their are squatted restaurants, bars, internet cafes, and of course apartments.

Despite political pressure and police evictions, there are a few remaining squats in Canada and the US.
